Title
The effects of pravastatin on hospital admission in
hypercholesterolemic middle aged men
Purpose
To determine the effect of lipid lowering with pravastatin
on hospital admissions in the WOSCOPS
Design
As per WOSCOPS
Patients
As per WOSCOPS
Follow-up
Mean of 4.9 years
Treatment regimen
As per WOSCOPS
Results
Overall 2198 (33%) of the 6595 men were admitted
to the hospital. There were 4333 admissions and 28%
were related to cardiac disease. The number of men requiring
hospitalization for cardiovascular causes was reduced
by 21% (p = 0.008) in the pravastatin group compared
to placebo.
Hospital admissions for cardiac causes per 1000
subject years was decreased by 10.8% (p = 0.0013) in
the pravastatin group compared to the placebo group.
Conclusion
Pravastatin decreased hospital admissions for cardiovascular
disease in middle aged men with hypercholesterolemia.
