Description
Norfloxacin is a synthetic broad spectrum
antibacterial agent belonging to the fluoroquinolone
group. It exerts its bactericidal effect by inhibiting
the A subunit of DNA gyrase, an essential enzyme involved
in DNA replication.
Indications
URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS
Acute, uncomplicated, complicated, chronic and recurrent
UTI.
BACTERIAL ENTERIC INFECTIONS
Bacterial gastroenteritis caused by enteropatho-genic
E.coli and Shigella sp.
SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES
Gonorrhoea, gonococcal urethritis and cervicitis,
and chancroid.
Dosage
and Administration
Norflox should be taken one hour
before or two hours after meals with a glass of water.
Patients should be advised to drink fluids liberally.
Antacids should not be taken concomitantly or within
two hours of dosing.
URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS
Uncomplicated
400 mg twice daily for three to ten days
Complicated
400 mg twice daily for up to 21 days.
Acute gastroenteritis
400 mg twice daily for five days.
Gonococcal urethritis or cervicitis
A single dose of 800 mg.
In impaired renal function
If creatinine clearance is between 10 and 30 ml/min
the dose should be reduced to 200 mg twice daily or
400 mg once daily.
