Indications
Novaclox is a combination of
two beta-lactam antibiotics, amoxycillin and cloxacillin.
They exert their bactericidal action by inhibition
of cell wall synthesis.
Amoxycillin is active against a wide range of gram
positive and gram negative pathogens, and cloxacillin
acts against penicillinase producing gram positive
pathogens.
Indications
RESPIRATORY TRACT INFECTIONS
Tonsillar abscess, otitis media, suppurative sinus infection,
acute and chronic bronchitis, bronchi-ectasis, bronchopneumonia,
pleurisy, empyema, lung abscess, emphysema, bronchiolitis.
GYNAECOLOGICAL INFECTIONS
Septic abortion, puerperal infections, caesarean sections
and other gynaecological surgeries.
URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS
Acute and chronic pyelonephritis, cystitis, urethritis.
SKIN AND SOFT TISSUE INFECTIONS
Recurrent boils, carbuncles, impetigo, cellulitis and
other infected dermatoses.
BONE INFECTIONS
Osteomyelitis and septic arthritis.
SERIOUS INFECTIONS
Septicaemia, bacterial endocarditis, brain abscess and
bacterial meningitis.
IMPAIRED
RENAL FUNCTION
If creatinine clearance is between
10 and 30 ml/minute the dose should be reduced to one
tablet daily.
Dosage and Administration
Novaclox Capsules/Pedtabs
The dosage differs depending on the type, site and severity
of infections.
Adults
One capsule three to four times daily.
Children
One pedtab three to four times daily.
Novaclox Injection
The dosage differs depending on the type, site and severity
of infections. It can be given either by the I.M. or
I.V. route. For I.M. use, dilute with 1 3 ml of sterile
water. For I.V. use, dilute with 5 ml of sterile water.
Adults
One to two vials every six to eight hours. Novaclox
Injection is compatible with commonly used intravenous
infusion fluids.
In impaired renal function
The dosage should be modified in patients with severe
renal impairment, by increasing the intervals between
doses. With a creatinine clearance between 10 and 50
ml/min the dosing interval can be up to 12 hours. If
the clearance is less than 10 ml/min the interval can
be 16 hours..
Caution
Novaclox injectable solutions
should be used immediately after reconstitution.
Contraindications
History of allergic reaction
to any of the penicillins.
Warnings and Precautions
DRUG INTERACTIONS
Allopurinol: A significant increase
in skin rashes is observed when allopurinol and amoxycillin
are given concurrently.
Bacteriostatic drugs such as chloramphenicol, erythromycin
and tetracyclines may reduce the bactericidal action
of amoxycillin and cloxacillin.
PREGNANCY
Novaclox can be given during
pregnancy. However the drug should be used with caution.
NURSING MOTHERS
Norflox-TZ is not recommended
for use by nursing mothers.
PAEDIATRIC
USE
Although the drug can be safely
given to nursing mothers, there is some risk to the
baby of sensitisation, skin rash and diarrhoea.
PAEDIATRIC
USE
Because of incompletely developed renal function in
new borns, penicillinase resistant penicillins may not
be completely excreted, with abnormally high blood levels
resulting. Frequent blood levels are advisable in this
group.
Side
Effects
As with all penicillins, side
effects are generally those related to allergic response
.
