Description
Novamox AX is a combination
of the beta lactam antibiotic amoxycillin and a mucolytic
ambroxol. Amoxycillin exerts its bactericidal action
by inhibition of cell wall synthesis. It is active
against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative
pathogens. Ambroxol is a mucolytic possessing stimulating
action upon the ciliary epithelium and upon the production
of surfactant.
Indications
Acute and chronic infections
of the respiratory tract associated with abnormal
secretions, particularly, acute bronchitis, asthmatic
bronchitis, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis,
bronchiectasis, and bronchial asthma. It can also
be used to treat otitis media,pharyngitis pneumonia
and tonsillitis.
Dosage and Administration
Novamox AX 250
In mild infection: 1 tablet every 8 hours.
Novamox AX 500
Adults and children above 10 years: 1 tablet every
8 hours.
Children below 10 years: ½ tablet every 8 hours.
In impaired renal function: A dose of amoxycillin
250-500 mg every 16-24 hours is suggested for adults
with creatinine clearance less than 30 ml/minute.
Novamox AX Rediuse
Above 5 yrs.: 5 ml t.i.d.
Below 5 yrs.: 2.5 ml t.i.d.
Contraindications
Novamox AX use is contraindicated
only in those cases where there is a previous history
of hypersensitivity to the active ingredients.
Warnings
and Precautions
DRUG INTERACTIONS
Allopurinol: A significant
increase in skin rashes is observed when allopurinol
and amoxycillin are given concurrently.
Bacteriostatic drugs: like chloramphenicol, erythromycin
and tetracyclines may reduce the bactericidal action
of amoxycillin.
PREGNANCY AND LACTATION
Safety of ambroxol in pregnancy
has not yet been established. The usual precaution
regarding the use of drugs at this time, especially
during the first trimester should be observed. Safety
during lactation has not yet been established.
OTHERS
The drug should not be given
to patients who have shown hypersensitivity to other
penicillins. It should not be given to patients with
suspected infectious mononucleosis as the incidence
of rashes is high.
Side
Effects
Adverse effects include fatigue,
dry mouth, rhinorrhoea, dysuria and contact dermatitis.
