The clinical management of the HIV-infected patient certainly
poses a challenge, due to the wide spectrum of opportunistic
infections which are encountered. Triple drug therapy with
antiretrovirals is currently considered the most optimum
approach to inhibiting viral replication. Superimposed on
this regimen are drugs used to treat opportunistic infections.
Thus, multiple classes of drugs are typically administered
concomitantly. Drug interactions between these various classes
are complex, and need to be borne in mind for ensuring therapeutic
success.
