Advances in treating HIV infection constitute one of
the most spectacular developments in therapy in recent
times. The development of potent antiretroviral therapy
has now changed perceptions towards HIV infection from
a death sentence to a chronic manageable infection.
However, one of the major obstacles to realizing the
full potential of antiretroviral therapy lies in problems
with patient compliance with therapy. Compliance is
crucial, because the virus multiplies at an extremely
rapid rate, and missed doses lead to emergence of resistant
virus and consequently, failure of therapy.
Hence, attention is now focused on tools that would
improve patient adherence. It is towards achieving this
goal that Triomune,
the world's first fixed-dose combination of stavudine
+ lamivudine (2 NRTIs) + nevirapine (1 NNRTI), is directed.
With the introduction of Triomune,
patients need to take just 1 tablet twice daily, irrespective
of meals.
This dossier outlines the importance of adherence in
antiretroviral therapy, and discusses the role of
Triomune.
